The Evidence Regarding The Role Of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is crucial for the optimum performance and  protection of your brain.

In 2013 an international group of experts who formed a task group to study the evidence regarding the role of vitamin D in the mental health of humans concluded that vitamin D deficiency was a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia as people grew older, while also suggesting that vitamin D deficiency in utero as well as throughout life has serious long-lasting consequences for mental health(J Intern Med 2014;277:45-57).

Vitamin D receptors are found in nearly all human organs – including multiple sites in the brain.  Since vitamin D is a fat soluble neuro-steroid, it easily traverses the blood brain barrier to enter neuronal and other supportive cells and regulates several thousand genes responsible for up to 80 different metabolic processes including cellular growth and proliferation, differentiation, synaptic plasticity, calcium signalling, neurotrophic factor regulation, neurotransmission, neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory actions.
